Various ways are done to hasten fire extinguishing process. One of those ways is adding dry hydrants in fire-prone points.
Dry hydrant is expected to be effective in extinguishing fire if fire trucks have difficulty to reach fire location
In West Jakarta alone, it is recorded that until this month as many as 221 fire cases happened in the municipality. From those cases, the losses suffered reach Rp 3.5 billion.
Head of West Jakarta Fire and Disaster Handling Sub-Department Operational Section, Abdul Wahid, told that his side will install four dry hydrants to hasten fire extinguishing process. Each of those hydrants will be installed in Jembatan Besi, Duri Utara, Kembangan, and Kebon Jeruk.
Fire Incident Damaging Server for Auction Process“The hydrant which already installed is in Jembatan Besi, while the other three are still in auction process in Jakarta Goods and Services Procurement Unit (ULP),” he stated, Sunday (10/26).
According to Wahid, the budget to buy and install these dry hydrants reaches Rp 2.6 billion. Dry hydrant itself is a solution to extinguish fire in dense settlement.
“Dry hydrant is expected to be effective in extinguishing fire if fire trucks have difficulty to reach fire location,” he said.
Dry hydrant works as connecting pipe from water tank truck to fire location. It has inlet and outlet points that connect through underground pipe that remains dry. The inlet point is usually located near high way, while the outlet point is located on the hydrant.
“So, when fire occurs, firefighters just need to connect the hose from the water tank to the inlet. Water will then flow to the outlet so the firefighters only need to connect the hose from the outlet to extinguish the fire,” explained Wahid.
